Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has signalled he is seeking a "new beginning" with neighbouring Bangladesh in a personal message to Tarique Rahman, acting head of the country's largest political party.

Mr Modi made the diplomatic overture in a condolence letter to Mr Rahman following the death of his mother, former prime minister Khaleda Zia. Mr Rahman, who was exiled in the UK for 17 years, returned to Bangladesh last week to take full control of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, widely seen as the frontrunner in February's parliamentary election.
