Anutin declares war on scammers

Pledges to ramp up cybercrime battle

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul vowed to wage an all-out war on scammers as he unveiled the results of a sweeping national operation against online fraud and cybercrime yesterday.

Speaking at a press conference alongside the National Police Chief Pol Gen Kittharath Punpetch, Mr Anutin called the government's “United Thailand Against Scammers”, an initiative to dismantle transnational criminal networks and restore public confidence in the digital economy, a success.

Citing figures from the police, Mr Anutin said between Oct 27 and Nov 8, authorities arrested 7,174 suspects in coordinated raids across the country.

The suspects were wanted in connection with 90 organised crime cases, 795 cases involving mule bank accounts and illegal SIM cards, and 11 cases tied to illegal communication devices and base stations.
