Tributes to departing skipper Seamus
Accrington Observer
|May 16, 2025
CAPTAIN Seamus Conneely will leave Accrington Stanley this summer upon the expiry of his current contract after more than ten years at the cluib.
-
The Reds skipper, who joined Stanley in January 2015, played a major part in the 2015/16 Play-Off campaign and lifted the 2017/18 League Two trophy in our title-winning season.
Having enjoyed a testimonial year in 2023/24, the 36-year-old has been an integral part of the club over his 10 plus years at the Wham Stadium, where he has made 378 appearances, scoring 14 goals and contributing 13 assists.
Manager John Doolan said: “Seamus has led the football club superbly both on and off the field of play for over a decade.
“He played a big part as Stanley won the League Two title in season 2017/18 and has worked tirelessly as a community champion on behalf of the club and Community Trust for many years.
“He has been the ultimate professional throughout his time with Stanley and will go down as a club legend.”
A number of his former teammates have talked about the impact Seamus has had on them and the club.
Defender Mark Hughes was part of both the 2015/16 and 2017/18 campaigns alongside the inspirational skipper.
He said: “Seamus has been an unreal servant to the club, he has probably been the most consistent player at Accrington in the last 10 years.
“He has kept a cool head at all times on and off the pitch.
