A Conversation with Capt. Tamal Roy
In the world of Indian logistics and maritime strategy, few voices carry the authority and depth of experience that Capt. Tamal Roy brings. As Convenor of the Cll Goa Panel on Logistics and Group President & Chief Strategy Officer at the J M Baxi Group, he has spent over three decades shaping the way India moves goods across oceans, ports, railways, and inland waterways.
From his early years as a Master Mariner to steering the growth of one of India's most influential logistics companies, Capt. Roy has lived every layer of the supply chain, on both sea and land.
In an exclusive conversation with Incredible Goa, he shares his journey and his sharply defined vision for Goa's future as a modern, environmentally aligned logistics hub. Capt. Roy's entry into logistics began on the deck of a ship.
Having sailed for 12 years and reached the rank of captain, he made a pivotal decision: to step ashore and restart his career from the bottom. It was a choice that required humility and determination, but it eventually led him into leadership positions with large organisations including the Adani Group, Tata Group, a Norwegian shipping company, and finally the J M Baxi Group. His transition from sea to shore offered him a perspective few professionals possess-an intimate understanding of how global logistics truly work.
One of the most formative chapters of his career came when he joined the development of one of India's earliest large-scale private ports. What began as swamp land went on to receive its first vessel, and he witnessed every stage of the transformation. Those years, he says, taught him more than any classroom could: the art of real-time problem solving, the importance of designing efficient hubs, and the vast potential of ports as engines of economic growth.
