When Barbara Walters first went on the air on NBC’s Today show in 1961, she was known as the “Today Girl” — responsible for lighter fare like fashion and weather. It was a far cry from where she would ultimately land: sitting face-to-face with world leaders and celebrities, co-anchoring the ABC evening news and reshaping the boundaries of broadcast journalism. As filmmaker Jackie Jesko tells Closer, “She completely changed what the American media landscape looks like.”
