The MSME sector is one of the pillars of the Indian economy that is contributing almost 30 percent of the country’s GDP and providing employment to more than 117 million people. In a globalised world where entrepreneurship is the lifeblood of modern economies and a cherished dream of millions of innovative people, it is only fitting that the MSME sector is receiving its due recognition and attention from the Indian government.

One of the biggest roadblocks faced by budding entrepreneurs in our country is the lack of funds to start and sustain a business. To ensure that a brilliant business idea does not choke and face an untimely death, the Government of India has come up with several options for business loans and is relentlessly trying to improve the ease of doing business in the country. By withdrawing angel tax on startups, easing the corporate tax rates on businesses and announcing bank recapitalisation, the Government has shown its commitment towards addressing the problems of capital and investment in the Indian economy. From government loan schemes to micro-financing and insurance facilities for businesses, including agricultural MSMEs, there is a lot going on in the business domain that inspired us to explore this theme in this issue.

This month, we delve into the various insurance schemes available for SMEs and how they can insulate your growing business from unforeseen troubles. We will also explore the loans and schemes provided by banks and NBFCs to entrepreneurs, especially women entrepreneurs.
