I don't understand their obsession
A couple of my friends are regular posters on Facebook.
They write long screeds that I think are dull and self-indulgent. I have no problem with them doing that – it’s their choice. What I find difficult is when they ask me why I haven't read them and posted a comment. I make up excuses and do it for a while. But I don’t make comments on Facebook. It’s not my thing. How do I tell them nicely?
Sophie, Yorkshire
What is it that you want to tell them? That their posts don’t interest you or that you don’t comment on Facebook posts? If it’s the former, it may upset them; the latter is a statement that they may wonder about but won't feel is personal. You can also ask them why they want you to comment. If it is to enhance something they're doing, such as building a business or profile, you may feel differently towards the posts and be happy to contribute. We all use social media differently, and some of us not at all. It’s important to respect everyone's choices.
