Here's what you need to know to protect you and your loved ones this summer

12 sun-safety MYTHS DEBUNKED

1 You CAN’T BURN ON A CLOUDY DAY

Yes, you can. ‘Even if you can’t see any blue sky, a significant amount of UV rays can still get through the clouds,’ says consultant dermatologist Dr Anjali Mahto*. ‘So it’s best to apply sunscreen if you’re out and about during the summer.’

‘Despite what the packaging promises, swimming, sweating, rubbing or towelling down means you will end up removing the sunscreen from your body,’ says Dr Mahto. ‘Always reapply after sporting activity or at least every two hours.’

3 FAKE TAN PROTECTS

Fake tanning products do not prime your skin to protect itself from UV rays. Some do have an SPF rating but it should not be relied upon for continued protection.

4 MORE EXPENSIVE SUNSCREENS OFFER BETTER PROTECTION

Not necessarily. When it comes to protection, the most important thing is the SPF and the star rating. ‘Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that offers protection against UVA and UVB, with an SPF of at least 30,’ says Dr Mahto. The star rating on your sunscreen bottle shows the level of UVA protection given, so pick a product with four or more stars. Or look for the letters ‘UVA’ in a circle if you can’t see a star rating.

5 MY SKIN TONE PROTECTS ME FROM CANCER

Whatever your skin type, exposure to UV radiation can cause permanent damage to your skin. While you may have a lower risk of burning and developing skin cancer, there’s still a risk.
