TRAUMA IN TEEN BREAKUP
Woman's Era
|December 2022
New age rules of break-up
We all go through breakups at some point or the other. Not every relationship lasts forever, in fact, most don't. Romantic relationships are common among teenagers and because of their short duration, breakups are also common.
One of the most challenging things for parents is when their child experiences pain. It can be hard to watch your teen go through the distress and pains of breaking up for the first time.
It is normal for the teens to have many short-term relationships as they go through puberty and discover more about their feelings, their needs, and the human flaws of people. Teenagers learn as much from a breakup as they do from a relationship.
When it comes to the break-up part, technology has definitely made it a lot easier. The report found that messaging is the most common means of ending a teen relationship.
While this may feel less respectful to the person receiving the bad news, some youth said that avoiding face-to-face contact gave them more privacy, allowing them to hide difficult feelings such as embarrassment.
And when it comes to recovering from a breakup, while it has been tough at all times and places, certain aspects of the digital age make it more difficult. Many young people find it hard to resist the temptation to check up on their ex online.
It seems that technology can fuel post-break-up business and ambition; giving young people the means to keep 'scratching the itch' even though they know it is unethical.
Most adults remember the breakup of a romantic relationship as the most traumatic event of their youth. Research shows that breakups are a leading cause of psychological distress and a leading cause of suicide among young people.
