Keep hearing the buzzword 'mindfulness'? The simple act of focusing on the here and now can bring huge benefits, as it reduces activity in the part of the brain called the amygdala, which is central to switching on your stress response. This means doing mindful meditations as a way of life will help you to remain calm, says hypnotherapist Ailsa Frank. Living a more mindful lifestyle might sound like a great idea but, hands up, who really has time to meditate? The good news is, you don't need to spend hours in a 'trance'. Step forward, micro meditation. Try these quick practices.
The eyes-open reflection
Find yourself with a minute or two to spare? Instead of scrolling through social media, give your mind an essential rest. 'When you are standing in a queue, waiting for a train or a bus, or waiting for the kettle to boil, relax your thoughts by staring at a focal point and allow your consciousness to fall away and focus on your breath, advises Ailsa. Just 30 seconds can make a difference and help you to re-centre your thoughts.
