Every year, up to 90 British people lose their lives while abroad. Woman investigates...

From holiday to NIGHTMARE

When it comes to going abroad, we all think of our favourite places to relax. It might be a beach with sun, sand and beautiful sunsets, a break with friends, working overseas in paradise or, better yet, a dream honeymoon.

But over the years, we've heard of some horrific crimes committed abroad where the victims - often young people and, sadly, children - were simply enjoying a holiday, their lives cut short when they should have been their happiest and most carefree.

According to LBT Global, a charity supporting people with overseas crises, there are around 860 open cases of people going missing abroad, some of them dating back 20 years. And every year, between 60 and 90 Brits die while on a foreign trip, often in suspicious circumstances. Woman takes a look back at some of the most high-profile cases that made the headlines...

BODIES ON THE BEACH

Hannah Witheridge and David Miller

Backpackers Hannah Witheridge, 23, and David Miller, 24, were exploring Thailand when they met at the Ocean View Bungalows on the island of Koh Tao, where they were both staying with friends.

On the evening of 14 September 2014, they had drinks at Choppers Bar and Grill then headed to the AC nightclub. In the early hours of the following morning, a cleaner discovered their bodies on Sairee Beach, near their hotel. Hannah had been raped and had head wounds, David had suffered blows to the head and drowned. A bloodied garden hoe was found nearby.

As authorities investigated, Thailand's police chief went to Koh Tao to run the case and the world's attention turned to the popular tourist destination, dubbed 'Death Island'. Under pressure, Thai officials scrambled to find the perpetrator.
