Visit the East Suffolk coast for Aldeburgh's traditional charms, varied history and famous pebble beach

Beside the SEASIDE

While some seaside spots have been a hit from day one, Aldeburgh’s rise, fall, then phoenix-like recovery makes it a fascinating place to visit.

At one time an important Tudor port and shipbuilding centre, it’s thought that some famous vessels, like Francis Drake’s globetrotting Golden Hind, were built here.

Yet when the port silted up and storms destroyed much of the old town, it fell into decline. Fortunately, the Victorians' deep enthusiasm for fresh air and a nice spot of sea-bathing turned it into a fashionable resort. Today, it buzzes with visitors strolling along the promenade that separates the steep, shingly beach from a row of soft-hued Victorian villas.
