From ritual to architecture, The Leela Palace Chennai transforms every moment into a celebration of South India.

PALACE BY THE SEA

IT’S NOT EVERY DAY you arrive at a hotel and feel like you've stepped into another world. But that’s exactly what happened when I first saw The Leela Palace Chennai. Perched along the Coromandel Coast, quietly overlooking the Bay of Bengal, it struck me as more than just a luxury stay—it felt like walking into a story.

imageInspired by the majestic Chettinad palaces of Tamil Nadu, the architecture is ornate yet grounded, expansive yet intimate. The corridors are lined with curated Indian art that don’t scream for attention but quietly tell their own stories.

Each evening, just as the sun began its descent into the sea, guests were invited to gather for the theepantham—a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony. I stood beneath the soft glow of oil lamps as live Carnatic music drifted across the gardens. It wasn’t performative, and felt deeply rooted and ritualistic, soon becoming something I'd look forward to each evening till the end of my stay.
