Champagne educator Kyla Kirkpatrick talks bubbles, Bonaparte and the sparkling secrets behind Brad Pitt's exclusive rosé champagne. Interview by Eleanor Edstrom
I figured out that champagne was my religion," Kyla Kirkpatrick tells us from her climate-controlled warehouse in Melbourne, a shrine of glinting bottles stacked up to the ceiling behind her.
Two decades ago, Kirkpatrick walked away from a thriving career in finance to follow her champagne calling.
"I broke off my relationship, packed up my house, gave away my job and bought myself a one-way ticket to Paris," she explains.
Today, she presides over a sparkling empire. Founding her first business in 2008 after representing Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy as an ambassador, Kirkpatrick – who is also professionally known as The Champagne Dame – shares the stories of passionate French winemakers through insider tastings, tours and masterclasses across Australia and France. Her second venture, Emperor Champagne, is one of Australia's leading online suppliers of fine champagnes.
