Video game maker Nintendo has confirmed a June 5 release for its Switch 2 console, priced at $449.99, following a detailed presentation aired online from its Kyoto headquarters.
-
The company showcased the successor to the original Switch, revealing new features like interactive chat and screensharing to connect players across its network.
For gamers and industry watchers, this unveiling marks a significant update to a platform that has sold over 140 million units since 2017.
The Switch 2 will launch with a larger 7.9-inch LCD screen, 256 gigabytes of storage, and enhanced Joy-Con controllers, maintaining its hybrid portable-home design. Nintendo plans a global rollout starting June 5, with pre-orders opening April 9, targeting its 50 million-plus U.S. user base. This announcement follows a trailer released earlier this year, which has already garnered over 40 million views online.
Nintendo aims to maintain its lead in the $50 billion U.S. gaming market, where competitors like Sony's PlayStation 5 and Microsoft's Xbox Series X|S have pushed hardware boundaries. The Switch 2's $449.99 price has sparked mixed reactions among fans, but the firm expects strong sales based on its predecessor's success. This console debut positions Nintendo to capitalize on growing demand for versatile gaming systems.SWITCH 2 OFFERS LARGER SCREEN AND STORAGE
Nintendo has equipped the Switch 2 with a 7.9-inch LCD screen, up from the original's 6.2 inches, paired with a 120-hertz refresh rate for smoother visuals.
The console includes 256 gigabytes of internal storage, doubling the capacity of the Switch OLED model, and supports expandable memory via microSD cards.Players will use updated Joy-Con controllers with magnetic attachments and mouse-like functionality for precise inputs.
