Microsoft has rolled out a new generation of AI agents inside Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, marking the company's most ambitious attempt yet to embed artificial intelligence into its core productivity tools.
-

The agents, which began rolling out in preview this week for Microsoft 365 subscribers, are designed to go beyond simple copilots by acting as autonomous assistants capable of handling tasks across documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.
HOW AI AGENTS WORK INSIDE OFFICE APPS
Unlike the existing Copilot features that focus on single prompts, the new Al agents are designed to operate more like persistent helpers that can track context, remember preferences, and execute multi-step tasks across applications. For example, in Word, an agent can draft a long-form report, insert relevant charts from Excel, and then create a corresponding PowerPoint presentation—all while keeping formatting and tone consistent.
In Excel, the agents can analyze large datasets, identify anomalies, and build models without users needing to know complex formulas. In PowerPoint, they can automatically generate slide decks from raw notes, add imagery from Microsoft's stock libraries, and even suggest transitions and visual layouts tailored to an audience. Users can interact with agents through natural language prompts, ask for revisions, and refine outputs in real time.
