Underground Cables - Challenges, Installation Practices, and Advantages
SPICOS - Electrical, Electronics, Power & Solar
|August - October 2025
In modern power transmission and distribution networks, underground cables are increasingly replacing traditional overhead lines, particularly in urban environments, industrial facilities, and areas of environmental sensitivity.

1. Introduction
Their concealed nature offers improved safety, reliability, and aesthetics, making them a preferred option in many scenarios.
However, while these systems eliminate several drawbacks of exposed conductors, they introduce their own technical complexities, cost implications, and maintenance considerations. This article examines the key challenges, installation processes, and operational benefits of underground cable systems in detail.
2. Classification of Underground Cables
Underground cables are designed in different configurations depending on their application and voltage rating:
1.Low Voltage (LV) — Up to 1 kV, typically for residential and small commercial service connections.
2.Medium Voltage (MV) — Between 1 kV and 33 kV, used in urban feeder networks and industrial sites.
3.High Voltage (HV) — From 33 kV to 220 kV, suited for large-scale transmission systems.
4.Extra High Voltage (EHV) and Ultra High Voltage (UHV) — Above 220 kV, applied in long-distance, high-capacity transmission corridors.
Common insulation materials include XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene), PVC (polyvinyl chloride), and PILC (paper-insulated lead-covered) designs, chosen based on operational requirements and environmental conditions.
3. Technical and Operational Challenges
3.1 Higher Initial Expenditure
The upfront cost of underground cabling is significantly higher compared to overhead systems. This is due to expenses in trench excavation, ducting, protective covers, and the need for specialized manpower and machinery.
3.2 Fault Location and Rectification
