We compare the new top-end chip with its predecessor and reveal the key differences between the generations
-
AMD is taking full advantage of the phrase “make hay while the sun shines”. While Intel is facing numerous struggles, AMD is concentrating on its core strengths of making extremely fast processors. And that includes its top-end desktop chips, the Threadripper series designed for workstations.
AMD announced the upgraded Ryzen Threadripper 9000 Series at the Computex technology show in Taiwan in June, with the official launch in late July, along with the Pro-variants. We haven't yet seen samples of these, but the top-end 9995WX is a monster with 96 cores. Thanks to Wired2Fire, which received a Threadripper 9980X sample as we were going to press and upgraded its TRX50 Extreme 5090 Workstation with it, we could see exactly what uplift this new chip provided compared with the 7980X when supported by 128GB of DDR5-5600 RAM and a liquid-cooled RTX 5090 GPU. Note that the 9000 series supports up to DDR5-6400 memory, which would provide another marginal boost.
