Near schools, the road environment changes dramatically. There are sudden pedestrian movements, short sightlines, irregular crossing behaviour, and peak traffic compressed into narrow time windows. Yet, in many cases, the infrastructure remains unchanged, treating a school frontage no differently from a regular urban stretch. The result is a high-risk zone where minor driving errors can have irreversible consequences. School zone safety is not achieved through signage alone. It requires roads that communicate clearly with drivers, slow vehicles naturally, and prioritise visibility, predictability, and reaction time.

Why school zones demand a different design approach

Children process traffic differently from adults. Their judgment of vehicle speed and distance is limited, their height reduces visibility, and their movements are often impulsive. Expecting disciplined road behaviour from young pedestrians without redesigning the environment places the burden entirely on them.
