Bio-based lubricants are made from renewable organic sources such as vegetable oils, animal fats, and other natural ingredients. The advantages of such bio-based fluids are biodegradability, renewability, and low toxicity. These are being used in a variety of industries, including automotive, manufacturing, and other speciality applications, due to their unique eco-friendly features. The developed world is already adopting bio-based lubricants, particularly in automotive and industrial applications. Vegetable oil-based lubricants outperform mineral lubricants in terms of cost and lubricity.

Bio-lubricants have traditionally been used in environmentally focused applications. Despite their eco-friendly credentials, demand for bio-lubricants has remained limited and is primarily driven by government policies regarding climate change. However, sustainability and decarbonisation goals are driving more research in this field, resulting in a new generation of bio-based lubricants that combine green credentials with high-performance characteristics.
