APPLE TV ADDS GOOGLE CAST SUPPORT ON ANDROID
AppleMagazine
|December 19, 2025
Apple has quietly expanded the reach of its Apple TV app by adding native Google Cast support on Android, allowing users to stream content directly from their phones to Chromecast-enabled TVs and other Cast-compatible devices.
-
The change marks a technical and strategic shift for Apple's video service, which has historically relied on AirPlay and tight integration with Apple hardware to deliver content to the largest screen in the home.
The update does not alter Apple TV's pricing, catalog, or subscription structure, nor does it introduce new exclusive content. Instead, it focuses on distribution, lowering the friction for Android users who want to watch Apple TV originals without owning Apple hardware or relying on a smart TV app that may not be available on their device.
HOW GOOGLE CAST SUPPORT WORKS ON ANDROID
With the update, Android users can now open the Apple TV app and use the standard Cast icon to send video to compatible televisions, streaming dongles, and set-top boxes. This includes devices that support Google Cast natively, such as Chromecast, Android TV, Google TV, and some third-party smart TVs and speakers with screens.
Previously, Android users were limited to watching Apple TV content directly on their phones or tablets, unless their television had a native Apple TV app installed. Casting was not supported, which meant Apple TV stood out among major streaming services for lacking a basic Android playback feature that competitors have offered for years. The Google Cast implementation follows standard Cast behavior. Playback controls remain on the phone, while the video stream plays directly on the television. The phone acts as a controller rather than a mirror, reducing battery drain and allowing users to continue using their device while content plays.
Apple has not announced changes to video quality, subtitles, or audio formats alongside the Cast support. The update appears to focus solely on compatibility rather than adding new playback capabilities.
