Prop LAURA DELGADO has left Spanish rugby in a much better place than how she found it

- FRANCISCO ISAAC

A LEADER'S LEGACY

AURA DELGADO DUEÑAS has put the pen down, at least as an international player.

Ten years after making her debut for Spain, the prop has retired from Test rugby following the 2025 World Cup, with her club farewell with Harlequins set for the end of the upcoming PWR season. After 53 caps, 14 clubs, two World Cups and several trophies, 'Bimba' is facing a new chapter.

"My focus will be on growing rugby not only in Spain but in other countries and regions as well," the 35-year-old explains.

"I learnt that my role as captain went beyond the pitch; I had to be there for my team-mates, to inspire and motivate them, to hear their worries and help them face their own challenges. I want to keep helping players and that's why I am co-developing a programme in which I am going to be a mentor."

While she is unable to disclose details of the project scheduled to begin in the coming months, Delgado sheds light on her anticipated influence on future participants in the sport.

"Be it on a physical, technical and mindset level, I'm going to share what I've learnt with new young players and help them reach the very top of the game.

"However, it doesn't stop there, as the plan is to instil in those players the need to inspire their team-mates. We want to inspire a cycle of positivity and optimism."

Delgado's departure from Test rugby was met with a tsunami of emotions, and while she is still feeling the shockwaves of that farewell, the former Spain captain acknowledges the need to keep making an impact.

"That's part of my legacy as well. I need players, staff and board members to understand that we need to inspire each other. We need to listen to each other; we need to create opportunities for those who work really hard; and we need to be better as a community."
