“I replay my goal from the 2011 Champions League Final and still get emotional – our Barça team was almost indestructible”

- Interview Dani Gil

PEDRO

Look through the Spain lineup that won the 2010 World Cup Final, or the Barcelona side that clinched the Champions League at Wembley a year later, and you'll find only one name who's still playing for a club in European football's elite leagues.

Together with Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets, Xavi, Andres Iniesta and David Villa, Pedro was one of six players to be part of both of those iconic XIs. Aged 38, he recently commenced his sixth season in Serie A, after maintaining his goalscoring form for Lazio and penning a one-year contract extension.

Six is a number that has long held significance for the forward in other ways, too. Back in 2009, he became the first player in history to score in six major club competitions in the same calendar year – La Liga, Copa del Rey, Champions League, Spanish Super Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup. It was a year in which Pep Guardiola's Barça won all six trophies.

Pedro may not have been the most famous name in that squad, but he twice claimed the Treble at the Camp Nou and more than played his part. Later, he won the Premier League at Chelsea but experienced turbulence under Jose Mourinho both there and at Roma, before making his cross-city move to Lazio. Age, the winger says, is nothing more than a number on his ID card – and he's not finished scoring goals yet.

You're from Tenerife, what was it like growing up there?

Macey Richardson, Crewe

I spent many hours at the sports centre in Abades, the village where I grew up. Later I started playing for San Isidro, but most of all, I have vivid memories of being with my friends and my brother's friends, who were older and taught me to be more cunning. Street football is disappearing, and it's a shame because we learned so much there – playing out on the street or at the beach was incredibly valuable.

How were you spotted by Barcelona?

Josh Gardner, Ipswich
