Summer 2023

The goal machine includes a mixture of players from the great Liverpool side he spearheaded, as well as a sprinkling of team-mates with the Republic of Ireland...

MY PERFECT XI JOHN ALDRIDGE

BRUCE GROBBELAAR

"My goalkeeper would have to be Bruce. He was an eccentric guy, but so agile - some of the saves he pulled off were just ridiculous. He was probably one of the first keepers who was also decent with his feet. He'd come out and win the ball, and was extremely good at it. He'd play outfield in five-a-side matches at training, and did well at that too."

STEVE NICOL

"Steve could drink like a fish and eat all the s**t in the world, yet look like a greyhound! He could score 10 or 12 goals a season from right-back. He was astounding - absolutely brilliant. He was a solid defender, but going forward, you look at Trent Alexander-Arnold and Nicol was like that: top-quality."

PAUL MCGRATH

"When I played for Liverpool and faced Paul against Manchester United or Aston Villa, or during Ireland training, he was always one of the hardest defenders to beat. We know he had injuries and couldn't practise, but he was remarkable - his strength was unreal."
