Monsoon withdrawal stalls after early start

AFTER UNLEASHING unusually heavy spells of rain across northwest India, the southwest monsoon began withdrawing three days earlier than normal, on September 14.

But its retreat soon faltered. After exiting the northwest region, the monsoon stalled on September 26, significantly delaying its usual withdrawal from Maharashtra, which begins around October 5. The pause was triggered by sustained low-pressure activity over the Bay of Bengal, which continued to feed moisture into central India. Su
