Retro games aren't just old games. I mean, obviously. Duh. They're nostalgia – a gateway to simpler, more innocent times. Yadda yadda. The term 'retro gaming' has come to mean playing and collecting old games.
-
But! I've started to wonder whether retro games might have become a genre in and of themselves, and that perhaps we've been using completely the wrong terminology. I shall explain.
Do you remember Britpop? Of course you do. You're old, like I am. I might not have had THAT haircut or worn a bucket hat, but I did grow my sideburns and buy a pair of John Lennon shades.
During those halcyon Britpop years, when British guitar music ruled the charts, Digitiser was at its peak. I hesitate to say we were part of the so-called Cool Britannia, but through Digi I did once share a cab with the bloke from Jesus Jones, go backstage at a Blur gig and see Oasis play Maine Road. It's odd to look back now and recall seeing the national flag everywhere, given how weirdly divisive it has since become.
