Generally speaking, you're either a Monkey Island fan or you've never played a Monkey Island game (or possibly you've only played Escape From...). We mention this because, despite an in-game scrapbook designed to get newcomers up to date with past events, it does give the feeling of being only really meant for existing fans - although playing the first game before this one should cover you for the majority of nods and winks.
The 'Return To' prefix in the title has clearly been chosen to acknowledge the 13 years that have passed since the last entry in the series, Tales From Monkey Island, was released. It is clear, too, that the new game is being used to communicate the developers' feelings about this return, and what that means for audience expectations, for better and for worse.
