The age of the developer is over," Wreckreation's executive producer Alex Ward proclaims - a bold choice of words when revealing Three Fields T Entertainment's new game. But that's not to say he's putting himself and the rest of the studio out of work, any more than the death of the author' has stopped people writing books.
Given the studio's history - it was set up by former Criterion employees, and its previous games have taken inspiration from Burnout (Danger Zone was essentially Crash mode as a standalone game; Dangerous Driving was very much a spiritual successor to Burnout) you'd expect it would eventually produce an equivalent of Burnout Paradise. Is this it? There's certainly a large open-world island you can drive around, but that barely scratches the surface of what's on offer, which is why the developers are giving us a demonstration.
Let's start with the title. Wreckreation is a portmanteau of ideas; there's wrecking obviously, and it's recreational, but the creation element is what's key. You're not just driving, you can build, tweak, and customise to your heart's content, which the game refers to as Live Mix mode. "We have the concept of you being the game DJ and you can mix the content however you want," Ward says. "We have a feature for live mixers to design, create, and build and mix together in real-time."
