Wave goodbye to Washington DC – the gang’s back in business in New York. Almost a decade after going their separate ways at the end of Payday 2, the crew members are reuniting to wreak havoc in what lead producer Andreas Häll-Penninger describes as “the capital of capitalism.”
He explains, “We just have a lot more opportunities to create heists in locations that are more iconic. They feel more Hollywood and just more epic in general. So there’s not really a specific mechanic tied to the New York setting, it’s more about the atmosphere, the immersion.”
That doesn’t mean the action hasn’t evolved, though. In addition to the change of city, there’s been a temporal shift, opening the door to more techy touches. “The Payday gang have updated their gadgetry […] So you will see more things like hacking, [and] micro cameras that you can place on NPCs […] and so on,” Häll-Penninger says.
And it’s not just Dallas, Hoxton, Chains, and Wolf getting with the times. Security is also being updated, presenting new obstacles like eye scanners and laser grids. NPCs can prove vital to neutralising these threats, either by allowing their retinas to be scanned or by proving useful as bargaining chips in hostage negotiations with the police.
