VAMPIRE: THE MASQUERADE - BLOODLINES 2

Take a cursory glance at Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 and you might think the game is in thrall to the cinematic universe of John Wick. Here is another violent, noir-adjacent adventure filled with dapper murderers and delicate alliances. It's set in a world in which a complex network of secret organisations exists beneath the polite urban layer that the rest of us navigate every day. And yet, if you go back to 2004's Bloodlines, not to mention the tabletop RPG game it's based on, all this is in there too.

When he was first approaching development on Bloodlines 2, Alex Skidmore, the game's creative director at The Chinese Room, did indeed go back to the original. He identified this intricate social landscape as the heart of the idea. "When I played Bloodlines, it took me a while to get really what it was," he admits. "And then I got it. It's the dialogue trees, the story, the characters, the politics."

imageThe series had been on a difficult journey by the time Skidmore got involved. The first Bloodlines is beloved, but it was overly ambitious and had shipped in an unfinished state. The sequel was announced in 2019 only to change developers in 2021, moving from Hardsuit Labs to The Chinese Room. Playing through the current build, which covers the early missions, what's surprising, then, is how confident it feels. Bloodlines 2's opening act offers a brisk blend of combat, urban exploration and politicking, all with that rich backdrop of warring vampire clans.

Possessor(s)

After three rounds of layoffs this year and Hyper Light Breaker’s curtailed development in early access, a lot seems to rest for Heart Machine on this plucky Metroidvania side project. The studio has an obvious knack for conjuring up fascinating fantasy worlds, but since its compact debut, Hyper Light Drifter, it’s been less obvious whether it can manage projects of a larger scale. And perhaps, on that count, even the modest Possessor(s) isn’t quite modest enough — it feels as much a victim of the company’s production woes as a showcase for its creative talent.

Street Fighter 6

Superstition might suggest that even numbers are more auspicious for the series, but it's fairer to say that Capcom learned from the mistakes of Street Fighter V and launched a fighting game that doesn't just feel like a full package, but one that has foundations to build on in future updates.

The Outer Worlds 2

There's always a risk in imitating something regarded as a classic: if it offers a template for success, it could just as easily invite unfavourable comparison. Obsidian Entertainment's Fallout: New Vegas has gained that reputation in the 15 years since its release, and while the original The Outer Worlds, led by Fallout creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, referenced that series without aping it, the sequel zeroes in on New Vegas as its direct source of inspiration. This explains both why The Outer Worlds 2 is a success and why it can't quite stand tall as a creation with its own identity.
