India nears strategic GE–HAL F414 engine ToT pact

India's defence and aerospace landscape is on the verge of a milestone in propulsion sovereignty, as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and GE Aerospace aim to finalise a high-value Transfer of Technology (ToT) agreement for the F414 fighter jet engine by March 2026.

This deal, expected to be formalised through a comprehensive contract between the two governments and companies, is set to catalyse indigenous production of advanced turbofans in India and profoundly strengthen the nation's defence industrial base.
The F414 engine is earmarked to power India’s HAL Tejas Mk2, the next-generation evolution of the Light Combat Aircraft family. Under the proposed arrangement, HAL would absorb critical manufacturing technologies, including advanced hot section production, assembly processes, and quality certification, allowing for an 80% technology transfer—a significant leap in India's aerospace autonomy.
