I identify myself more as a travel photographer than a purely landscape photographer.

Abhishek Dey's Photo World

As Told to Rohinton Mehta

Your landscape photographs are truly outstanding. What inspired you to choose landscape photography over other genres of photography?

Exploring new lands, geographies and cultures and documenting them gave me immense pleasure. Eventually, with time, I drifted closer to nature and landscapes as philosophically they give me a great sense of peace. Eventually, visualizing and planning a shot while chasing good light in a beautiful location pushed me to capture more landscapes than other genres of photography. I love putting a human figure(very often myself) in my landscapes so that the storytelling aspect of the image is enhanced.

imageDid you undergo any training in photography or are you self-trained?

I did not attend any formal photography training but have participated in various talks or workshops to enhance my basics. With the popularity of YouTube and Online courses, I have tried to learn from experts about image creation techniques from field to postprocessing.

imageI have struggled a lot with post-processing and building a workflow that suits my style took a lot of time and I am still trying every day to improve on every aspect of photography.

imageHow do you plan your trips, and what’s the approximate duration per trip? Do you travel solo or with like-minded friends?

I often try to plan my trips solo but there are many new countries that I plan with family or friends. Every year I try to plan at least 1 or 2 solo trips.

Are you ready to pay the price for an incredibly thin iPhone?

I'm not going to lie; I'm a Pro Max kinda guy. Ever since Apple released the 11 Pro Max, I've naturally gravitated towards the biggest, mostest iPhone. The iPhone Air then is the kind of phone I'd expectedly veer away from, the antithesis of the Pro Max, a phone that prioritized slimness and hand-feel over camera versatility and battery life. But, three weeks of testing the Air has me reconsidering my priorities, appreciating the in-the-hand benefits I'd long forgotten.
