High-speed photography can offer spectacular insights into the worlds of sports or wildlife. Being in the right place at the right time allows you to capture rare and fleeting moments, but such photography is also one of the most demanding genres. Fast action brings its own set of challenges, and without a deep knowledge of a wide range of camera technology, and of the subject, the likelihood of blurry results increases. It’s essential to know your camera
techniques if you’re not to miss the chance to get an outstanding shot. Equipment is one of the most important factors in action photography, but by learning to get the most out of affordable gear, you won’t have to stretch the budget to the extreme.
Aside from the speed of the action, there are other factors that make it hard to achieve good results. Preparation is key, and you’ll need to master changing light and weather conditions, and parameters such as distance to your subject and accurate focusing. If your subject is out of focus, post-processing won’t save it, so you must get to know different ways of dealing with fast movements in order to successfully convey the impression of speed and drama in a still image.
CAPTURE HIGH-SPEED MOVEMENT
Save time by using priority modes for sharp results
Switching to manual mode gives you full control over technical settings, but when you’re capturing fast sport or wildlife action, there’s limited time to adjust basics such as aperture, ISO and shutter speed. To avoid missing unique moments, spend time on settings, and take advantage of priority modes.
