Shooting and curating images from our portfolio is an essential skill for a wide variety of professional applications. As photographers, we are regularly called upon to create collections of shots for others, whether this includes simply friends and family, or even clients and corporate customers. We are expected to understand how images work, both in isolation and together, as part of a wider series. A perfect example of where this can be demonstrated is with a photo essay.
A great photo essay can be rewarding and exciting to put together. We often communicate with images alone in our day-to-day projects, but if the saying that a picture is worth a thousand words is true, then we have tremendous scope for creating an exciting visual story through our work.
While photo essays can be used purely for artistic satisfaction, there are other applications too. They can be a medium for showing off your photographic style across a set of genres or subjects in which you would like to become recognised. They can also demonstrate to potential employers or clients that you can shoot to a brief, maintain a focused theme and deliver a body of work which communicates a pre-visualised narrative – the benchmark of most professional photographers.
As a pro travel photographer, Kav Dadfar knows how to shoot a cohesive series of images. Turn over to discover his tips for getting started on your first photo essay and building a large range of transferable skills for your photography in general.
