Wendy Evans discusses the effect of focal length on portraits and which ones are best to use

Shoot perfect portrait lengths

You will often read that wide apertures are best for portraits, as though it's the only thing you need to consider. While that's true, the focal length of the lens you use and the distance to the subject have far more effect on the depth of field generated than the aperture itself. A subject at 3m, shot with a 75mm lens at f/8, still only has around 0.76m of depth of field, compared with an 18mm lens at f/2.8, which generates around 12m of depth. In comparison, that 75mm lens at f/2.8, in turn, only has 0.27m of depth.
