In such instances, creating a panorama is a great solution. While smartphone cameras offer a photo merge app for panoramic shots, the best quality is achieved by using a professional camera and stitching the photos together in Photoshop. In this article, we will share our step-by-step approach for creating high-quality panoramic images in Photoshop. Although it may take a bit more time compared to using a phone app, the end result is worth it. Taking the photos for a panorama is easy, but incorporating a few tips will make the process of merging them even more effective.

Creating a Panorama

A Relaxed Approach - Some photographers prefer to be meticulous, using a tripod and measuring everything, but we like to take a more laid-back approach. You don't need a tripod to make a panorama. Typically, panoramic shots are horizontal, but if the scene you are capturing is very wide, you need to be mindful of the potential for geometric distortion. To minimise this, it's best to leave extra space above and below the scene when you take the photos for the panorama. This will allow you to correct the distortion when you stitch the images together in Photoshop. Keep in mind that the closer you are to the subject, the more prominent the geometric distortion becomes. The same applies when creating vertical panoramas. If you take a panorama looking up at a tall building or tree, the closer you are, the more distorted the subject will appear when you merge the photos.
