With several deep space missions in the pipeline, opportunities for aerospace engineers have multiplied

Soaring demand for AEROSPACE ENGINEERS

The touchdown of Chandrayaan-3, the third mission of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), on the dark side of the moon (lunar south pole) on August 23 and its successful release of the Pragyan Rover made media headlines the worldover. This successful mission established India as one of four outer space powers of the world (after the US, Russia and China). This mission was followed up by the successful Aditya-I mission to the Sun.

“With several deep space missions in the offing, the demand for aerospace engineers is likely to double within the next five years,” says Dr. N.G.R. Iyengar, former pro vice chancellor of Jain University and director of the International Institute of Aerospace Engineering and Management (IIAEM, estb.2006), Bengaluru.

Aerospace engineering is a science which focuses on research, design, development, construction, testing, science and technology of aircraft and spacecraft. It is further divided into aeronautical and astronautical engineering. The former deals with aircraft operating in the Earth's atmosphere and the latter with aircraft venturing into outer space.

To qualify as an aerospace engineer, aspirants should be well-versed with the basic principles of aerodynamics, aerospace structures, flight mechanics and control, propulsion, avionics, meteorology, airworthiness regulation and air traffic control and management.
