Sowing seeds for the summer to come
Yorkshire Evening Post
|January 06, 2026
Seed sowing for the coming year, although it may seem early, begins now under cover.
This flying start is essential for specific ornamental plants that we depend on for vibrant outdoor displays throughout the summer.
Such plants develop slowly, and if their germination is postponed until spring, they may not reach their full potential in time.
Certain vegetables, such as onions - particularly those grown for exhibition - also benefit from being sown at this stage.
On my January sowing list for annual flowering plants are antirrhinum, begonia, and lobelia.
Other annuals ideally sown at this time include sweet pea, petunia, verbena, and salvia.
For perennials, options such as aquilegia, delphinium, echinacea, and penstemon can also be started now.
