Cupid's arrow hits as we all fall in love with watching the darts

Where can you find half a dozen traffic cones, a commentator with a voice straight out of Bullseye circa 1985, a flock of seagulls and a wasp?

- Kate Wobschall

Cupid's arrow hits as we all fall in love with watching the darts

It's not a trick question, nor is it a joke.

The answer is - the darts. Specifically, the World Darts Championship currently being shown on Sky Sports.

Taking place at London's Alexander Palace - or Ally Pally, in true darts parlance - at the 'Worlds' the throwing of arrows is second to the party atmosphere, the fancy dress and the downing of endless pints of lager. It's a bit like Bongo's Bingo only with large people in satin shirts throwing sharp things at the wall.

You have to wonder if Planet Funk, when they penned the song Chase the Sun, ever imagined it would inspire thousands of darts punters dressed as anything from oompa-loompas and dartboards to Where's Wally, Elvis and Scooby Doo to belt out "der der der der der... oi oi oi!" at the top of their voices.

We are now over a week into the tournament and the interest Chez Wobschall shows no signs of waning.

In fact, the teenager has put 'set of darts' right at the top of his Christmas list. No dartboard though, which makes me wonder if he's going to start taking pot shots at the cat. Hopefully not.
