New vet rules to tackle rising fees and hidden costs for Brits
-
Millions of pet owners could see clearer vet bills and fewer unexpected costs under the biggest reform of the sector in 60 years, as ministers move to clamp down on rising fees and opaque pricing.
The overhaul follows a Competition and Markets Authority investigation which found that problems in the vet market could cost households up to £1 billion over five years, with fees rising at almost twice the rate of inflation.
Under the proposals, veterinary practices will be required to publish price lists for common treatments and be clearer about treatment options and potential changes in cost, allowing owners to compare prices and avoid unexpected bills.
In a move aimed at boosting competition, vet businesses will also have to disclose ownership structures, so customers know whether their local practice is independent or part of a large corporate chain. Ministers believe greater transparency will encourage shopping around and help drive down costs over time.
