Miller, who identified the 21-yearold as a potential loanee 12 months ago.

He went to watch him play for Palace against PSV Eindhoven in the final of the Premier League International Cup, in which Whitworth kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 win. The hope is that he will return to St James’ Park, although that seems unlikely given how well his first loan away from Palace has gone and it would be no surprise to see Whitworth between the posts of a Championship club next season.

However, Whitworth expressed his gratitude to Miller, who also spotted Vili Sinisalo, another goalkeeper that thrived on loan in Devon in the 2023/24 season.
