No-one in fear of stigma should face HIV alone

EARLIER this month, I had the privilege of unveiling a plaque in Haverfordwest to honour Terry Higgins, one of the first people in the UK to die from an AIDS-related illness.

‘The plaque, at the hospital where Terry was born, serves as a permanent reminder of his legacy and the compassion that has driven our HIV response ever since. The organisation founded in his name - the Terrence Higgins Trust - has championed equality, care and dignity for more than 40 years.

‘The event was a stark reminder about how much has changed since Terry’s death in 1982, when HIV didn’t even have a name, let alone a test or treatment. But it also reminds us of how much there is still to do, especially in the face of reductions in global aid funding.
