Horses could be removed from common after ‘complaints’

HORSES which have been a familiar sight on Rhossili common for generations could be removed.

The National Trust says it has received “complaints about a stallion” which is part of the herd at the Gower location. It says it has written to the ‘commoner’ who owns the horse requesting it be moved elsewhere as a result of public safety concerns.

But it has further suggested that it is “reviewing” the number of horses currently grazing on the common, which it says exceeds the agreed limit.

It is understood that while the National Trust owns the common land at Rhossili, the management and care of livestock, including the horses, is the responsibility of ‘commoners, who each have rights to graze a certain number of animals on the land.
