Cross-country horse fell, landing on rider - inquest

A MUM from Powys was killed in a freak accident when her horse failed to jump a fence and landed on top of her, an inquest heard.

Primary school teacher Sarah Jayne Yorke, 37, was competing in an equestrian event when her horse fell at the third fence on the cross country course.

The hearing was told the keen horsewoman suffered chest and abdominal injuries after her horse fell at the fence - and she was caught underneath.

Mrs Yorke, of Newtown, Powys, had been competing in a one-day event at Aston-le-Walls Equestrian Centre in Daventry on Friday, August 8.

Anne Pember, senior coroner for Northamptonshire, heard her horse failed to take the fence and landed on top of her.

She added that other competitors had successfully completed the fence before Mrs Yorke’s accident.

Tributes flooded in for Mrs Yorke following her death.

The family of the mum of a seven-year-old girl were “absolutely devastated”, adding that they were “very grateful” for all the messages of support they had received since the tragic accident.
