IT'S a moment that remains firmly embedded in the national psyche all these decades later - and rightly so.

Yesterday marked the start of a week of commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

On this day in 1945, the allied forces were on the cusp of a hard-won Victory in Europe. Just two days later, on May 8, the UK and beyond would erupt in the joy of a day marking the end of hostilities across the continent.

From the long years of suffering under the yoke of the darkest of times, communities awoke to a new dawn - one of an unbridled celebration of the light of hope.
