It's show time again

AGRICULTURAL shaws have always been a very important port of rural life in Somerset and the West Country generally. Dating back to at least the 18th century they began as gatherings of rural folk who had an interest in farming techniques, livestock, specific crafts and skills. However, over time they have now developed into internationally recognised events which bring in thousands of visitors globally and provide a showcase for the agricultural community.
The first recorded agricultural show was held in Lancashire in 1768 and was organised by the Salford Agricultural Society. By the 19th century more organised events started to appear and national shows run by the Royal Agricultural Society became popular amongst the farming community initially concentrating on crop management, farming techniques and livestock. The success of such shows led to the purchase of land for the specific purpose of running such events and agricultural societies began to spread all over the country creating what we now know as showgrounds. These are currently used for many different events which have become popular with a wide range of individuals from farmers to families.
Today these shows include entertainment, stalls, exhibitions, demonstrations, food and drink. They also provide a chance for farmers and like-minded individuals to meet up and exchange ideas, whilst providing a showcase for livestock, local produce and businesses linked to the farming community.
