Cathedral to play host to glowing artwork

GLOWING seven-metre-wide replica of the sun will be the centrepiece of an immersive art installation at Bristol Cathedral this October, as part of a new city-wide tech and culture festival.

- LEWIS CLARKE

The illuminated sculpture, Helios, is the latest work by internationally renowned Bristol-based artist Luke Jerram and will be on display from Monday, October 6 to Wednesday, October 8. Installed inside the cathedral’s grand gothic architecture, the artwork merges science, sound and light into an experience designed to captivate visitors of all ages.

Helios features imagery of the sun’s surface mapped onto a glowing sphere, with each centimetre representing 2,000km of the solar giant's exterior. A specially created surround soundscape by Duncan Speakman and Sarah Anderson accompanies the visuals, transforming the cathedral into what organisers call an “otherworldly” environment after dark.
