£280k boost for youth mental health services

A CORNISH MP has called for greater investment in mental health services for young people and claimed chronic underfunding has left many with nowhere to turn for the support they need.

Jayne Kirkham, Labour MP for Truro and Falmouth, visited youth services centre Brook Young People Cornwall in Truro following the news that it was to receive £282,500 of new funding to secure jobs and the programmes it provides.

The funding comes from a national pot earmarked for community-based early support hubs across the country.

Ms Kirkham said: "The people who run our youth provision have often explained to me how their funding often comes from one-off grants or charitable funding, and that filling in the endless application forms and finding the next funding pot is a time-consuming and stressful way to run a service.

"That's why this investment is so important. It funds four full-time specialist counsellors and youth workers to provide early support to young people in Cornwall."
