SA's key IT skills shortage

Weekend Argus on Saturday

April 26, 2025

SOUTH Africa is experiencing a significant information technology (IT) skills shortage that is jeopardising its digital transformation and economic growth.

- MOHAMMED SAYED

SA's key IT skills shortage

Essential fields such as cybersecurity, data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI) and software development are notably impacted, with an estimated deficit of 20 000 to 70 000 qualified professionals.

Talent gap

A study conducted by Korn Ferry highlighted a global skills gap in the IT sector. The study argues that there will be a global human talent shortage of more than 85 million people by 2030. Unchecked, this talent shortage could result in about US$8.5 trillion in unrealised annual revenue due to the vast number of unfilled IT jobs worldwide.

South Africa will be no exception and is expected to experience substantial revenue loss due to the inability to fill IT positions.
