Asserting the Centre's commitment to tribal welfare, Union home minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said it was because of the measures taken in the Northeast by the Modi government, including agreements reached after 2019 with many tribes, that the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) has been lifted from more than 66% of the areas in the region.

New Delhi: He also said that in the eight years of the Congress-led UPA government from 2006-14, there were 8,700 untoward incidents in the Northeast, whereas in the past eight years of BJP regime, the number has come down to 1,700. "A secured Northeast and secured central India will pave the way for the development of tribals," he said.
Shah highlighted that the number of districts affected by Left-wing extremism has also come down by 70%.
